Sweep (Volume 1)

There is a lot to unpack here. This book, objectively, is terrible. I found myself rolling my eyes and laughing out of cringe. It was poorly written and very unrealistic. Each chapter ended with either a cliffhanger (that usually wasn’t even that interesting) or something along the lines of “this is who I am now, I’m a witch”. It was just very cringy and no teenage girl talks or thinks that way. The introduction of witches and wicca was also very unrealistic. In no world would all these kids be ok with joining the circle the first night they all hung out. Not only that, but I hate these stereotypical main characters. She sees herself as so plain and ugly and then Cal comes and says she is so special blah blah blah. Oh and of course her best friend is just so beautiful, it’s ridiculous, I get it is for relatability, but it is so overdone and the way she looks is ALWAYS mentioned. It gets old and again, in real life people wouldn’t be thinking about that 24/7 even with insecurity. And again, it’s not that she was even ugly, she just called herself “plain” all the time. Even though this book’s writing is pretty bad, the concept is there. It’s a good plot and the actually events of the novel are pretty good in theory. It’s just the poor writing and the main character, Morgan, is very annoying, though this wouldn’t bother me too much on it’s own. I think it’s normal to dislike a main character and it can make a book more interesting. The only reason this book gets a 3/5 stars is because I also have some nostalgia held in there. I read this for the first time in 5th grade I believe and it was honestly such a ride for little me lol.
